Our ewes are an integral part of our flock. They are just as important as the ram, as far as we are
concerned. Many breeders disagree with that notion. They believe that the ram carries more weight
because he influences the genetics of more lambs. Fifty percent of that lamb is made up of DNA from
the ewe; not only that, the ram is only with the ewe as long as it takes to breed and then his influence is
removed generally. The ewe is there, not only to contribute her DNA, but to influence the lambs socially,
temperamentally, and environmentally. Socially, by showing the lamb how to react toward the other
sheep & how to behave to keep himself out or trouble. Temperamentally because the lambs will mimic
her behavIor. You may say that is INSTINCTUAL BEHAVIOR. If so, then why is it that if you have a skittish
ewe you generally have skittish lambs and vice versa? We think the ewe has quite a bit of influence on
her lambs environmentally by teaching them it is not necessary to totally freak out each time the vet
comes for a visit, or if someone comes to the barn in the middle of the night to check on an ailing barn
mate, the lawn mower will not eat them, and motorcycles aren't going to crash through the fence.... at
least we hope not. Contributing all that along with her fifty percent of the DNA for the lamb, makes her
worthy of more than her fifty percent in our books. Yes, a good ram is a valuable asset to a flock, but
let's not sell our ewes short when it comes to their contributions.
Show Me 2 is the matriarch of our flock who guards her lambs against intruding predators as good as
any ram that we've ever seen. All our Arkansas line of ewes have descended from her because of the
value placed on her attributes. She was bred by Charles R. Beam, and she came to us from the Hatley
Farm in Arkansas. On January 29, 2010 she turned eleven years old, and four months later she presented
us with twins (a ram Lone Star Mojo and a ewe Lone Star Dive). Many of Show Me's ewe lambs will live
out their lives at Lone Star Farm following in their mother's footsteps. Every sheep in the flock
recognizes Show Me 2 as the Queen Mother of our farm.
Pictured above is Show Me 2. Below is her daughter Show Off 2. Bred by the Hatleys, Show Off came to us
as #19. We immediately recognized her quality and named her Show Off 2 so she could continue on in the
same theme as her Mum's name. You will note that we have continued in that vein as we named some of
their other offspring.
Following is a list of our foundatiion ewes and their offspring.
