Gideon is the product of a test breeding that we did. I have been told that some VSU
lines carry white markings. Not wanting to propagate white markings, we bred Caribe
VSU, our Saint Phillip daughter, to her son Lone Star Jolyon. We also bred Jolyon to two
of his full sisters and one of his half sisters, all daughters of Caribe. We wanted to know
if we are carrying white in the lines we are breeding. Since the DNA in families is similar,
when animals are inbred, you are doubling up their DNA, causing faults as well as good
points to multiply. It is a good way to tell what problems you may encounter in your
breeding program. It helps you know how to better choose your mating pairs and avoid
problems in the future. By breeding Jolyon to his mother and three sisters, if white is in
is in their DNA, it should show up in their lambs. Each of the four ewes produced twins,
and out of eight
lambs, none had white.
