Our Washington project is complete. After five days on the road, John has
made it home with his new flock. I hope John will be able to visit Texas
again sometime, but I have a feeling it will be awhile before he's ready
for another drive down here. More power to him for being dedicated enough
that he was willing to make the trip in the first place. We wish you well with
your new flock, John. Please know that we are here to answer any questions
and to help you in any way that we can as you get used to being a shepherd.
John said the lambs introduction to a foot of snow was uneventful. Just goes
to show you how adaptable these sheep really are.
Below is a picture of our veterinarian, Dr. Ken Bockhorn, examining the lambs
for their trip to Washington.

We have been corresponding via e-mail with fellow breeder and new friend, Wesley Bradshaw, of St. Philip parish in Barbados. We are learning
many new and interesting things about Black Bellies from Wesley, but we
wanted to take a moment to share Wesley's good fortune with you. Today,
January 1, 2012, his ewe, first-time-mom St. Andrew, (named for the parish
she came from) gave birth to her first lamb who weighed in at a whopping
8 lbs. I would like to present to you . . . . . .

(Breeder and Owner, Wesley Bradshaw, St. Philip, Barbados)
Congratulations, Wesley! What a wonderful way to start the new year.
We limited our breeding this Fall to two small groups of ewes that will
be lambing in March and April of 2012. We have bred.....

Here's What's New
Recently we have had the opportunity to meet some of the nicest people. Three
separate families have visited our farm to see the sheep and get a first hand look
at farm life. These folks have chosen to leave the rat race of "big city life" and
purchase homesteads with acreage to live on and to farm in an effort to live a
more healthy lifestyle. They are dedicated enough to have left lucrative careers
in order to safeguard the health and future of their families, planning to process
their own meat, grow their own produce and home school their children, all for
the reward of going to bed at night exhausted from the day's accomplishments
knowing that all is well on their little plot of the world. A good decision made,
in our estimation.
All they lack is experience. They have expressed a willingness to help us with
our work in exchange for our knowledge of raising animals, gardening and
general farm chores. As Mike and I aren't getting any younger, we welcome
their energy and determination to succeed as we embark on this new adventure.
Thank you again, Lord, for sending someone to help us when we need it most.
Your ideas and timing never cease to amaze me.
I was contacted by Brett Hodges, founder and editor of
RightPet, and asked to write a review on the Barbados
Blackbelly. RightPet is an international educational site
which allows animal owners to review the pets, livestock
and working animals they've owned, and recommend the
animal services/businesses they like. They currently have
over 2,500 different breeds and species listed on the site
and it is one of the most comprehensive animal sites on
the web. Livestock breeds are reviewed not as pets but
Lone Star Romeo for their commercial value.
After submitting my review, Brett perused our website then contacted me again to
ask for permission to use one of the pictures seen there as their main breed image.
Of course, I gave my permission and couldn't wait to see which sheep had been
chosen. It was Lone Star Romeo!
