The photo on this page is Lone Star Waylan, a four year old ram. Waylan's head is the epitome of what a ram's head should look like. No scurs, no hornbuds, deep indentations in his head as you can easily see in the picture. We don't always get that kind of head, but it is the best of the best as far as we are concerned. It is the goal we strive for as the perfect ram head. We have coined the phrase "bowling-ball head" because you can put a finger in one indentation and your thumb in the other indentation and move his head side to side.
The revised breed standard of the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep Association International (BBSAI) states that 3/4" scurs affixed to the head are "Acceptable" under the heading of "Poll". In fact, even though it is discouraged, it is not a disqualifying fault for a ram to have scurs affixed to the head up to, and including, 1 1/2" in length. Mike and I are of the opinion that if a ram has a perfectly clean head, there is no doubt about his lineage of polled-ness. We will not sell a ram with anything less that a completely clean head. In fact, if your ram would happen to grow horn material after your purchase, we will replace that ram with one that is polled. It is our guarantee to breed only the best quality so that you may feel confident in buying a ram to improve the quality of your flock. We do not breed rams with wattles and we do not breed rams with any white markings. We are trying to eliminate these traits that keep popping up in some bloodlines. Our ideal is to constantly be breeding towards the "Ideal" of the breed standard. Of course, it goes without saying, that our rams are guaranteed to be fertile.
All registered breeding stock from Lone Star Farm are guaranteed healthy and they are guaranteed to produce quality lambs, provided they are properly cared for, or we will replace them. You have 72 hours from the time the sheep leave our farm to have them checked by a licensed veterinarian. All sheep are guaranteed to have no white markings and no waddles. All rams are guaranteed to have clean heads with no scurs or horn material at all. If your ram should grow scurs after you purchase him, we will replace him.
Each sheep is registered with the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep Association International (BBSAI). Signed registration certificates accompany each sheep, along with each individual animal's Codon 171 report of scrapie resistance. Please understand that the ewes and rams have been specifically grouped as a starter flock, so that you may have as much genetic diversity as possible. If an animal should need to be replaced, we will do our best to replace it with similar genetics.
